IT/Desktop Support Commands Every IT Professional Should Know

A practical Windows command cheat sheet for IT support, troubleshooting, networking, and everyday system administration.

Whether you're an IT administrator, help desk technician, systems engineer, or someone who enjoys learning more about Windows administration, knowing the right command at the right time can save valuable troubleshooting time.

At MSLS Partners, our engineers use many of these tools daily while supporting businesses, schools, and nonprofit organizations throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. While modern graphical interfaces make administration easier, command-line utilities remain some of the fastest and most effective ways to diagnose and resolve technical issues.

🚀 Why These Commands Matter

When a computer is not performing correctly, every minute counts. Instead of navigating through multiple menus, many Windows tools can be launched instantly from Command Prompt, PowerShell, or the Run dialog using Windows + R.

🖥 System Information

View hardware details, Windows configuration, system health, and installed components.

🌐 Networking

Troubleshoot DNS, IP addressing, routing, internet connectivity, and network shares.

👤 User Management

Access local users, groups, passwords, policies, and administrator tools quickly.

⚙ Run Commands

Launch Windows utilities like Device Manager, Printers, Firewall, and Network Connections.

⭐ Some of Our Favorite Commands

ipconfig /all

Displays complete network configuration information including IP address, gateway, DNS servers, DHCP information, and MAC address.

MSLS Tip: This is one of the first commands we use when diagnosing network connectivity issues.

ping

A simple but powerful tool that verifies whether a device, server, printer, or website is reachable across the network.

MSLS Tip: Use it to quickly determine whether the problem is local, network-related, or internet-related.

tracert

Shows the route traffic takes between your computer and a destination. This helps identify where communication may be failing.

nslookup

Helps verify whether DNS is resolving correctly. DNS issues are one of the most common causes of connectivity problems.

sfc /scannow

Scans protected Windows system files and attempts to repair corrupted operating system components.

services.msc

Opens the Windows Services console, allowing administrators to review, start, stop, and restart Windows services.

🎓 Great for New IT Professionals

If you're studying for certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, or Microsoft certifications, becoming comfortable with these commands will give you a strong foundation.

Many experienced engineers still rely on these same commands every day because they are fast, reliable, and available on most Windows systems.
